August 17, 1821.
AN ACT to encourage the killing of Wolves.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the governor and judges of the territory of Michigan, that any person, who shall kill any wolf or wolves within six miles of any settlement of white persons in the territory of Michigan, shall receive for each wolf above six months old, any sum not less than two dollars, nor more than five dollars; and for each wolf under that age, any sum not less than one dollar, nor more than two dollars and fifty cents, as the commissioners of the respective counties shall previously direct.
Section 2. And be it further enacted, that any person claiming such reward, shall produce the scalp of such wolf as he may have killed, to some justice of the peace, who shall cause the ears on such scalp to be destroyed in his presence, and shall give to the person producing the to a certificate, specifying therein the number of scalps produced by such person.
Section 3. And be it further enacted, that the person procuring such certificate, shall present the same to the commissioners of the proper county, who shall cause to be administered to such person, the following oath, “You A. B. do solemnly swear that the wolf or wolves, mentioned in the certificate, now produced by you, were killed within thirty days next preceding the date thereof, and you verily believe the same have been over, (or under,) the age of six months. (as the case may be,) and have been killed within six miles of some settlement of white persons in this territory, and that you have not spared the life of any bitch wolf, in your power to kill, with a design to increase the breed.”
Section 4. And be it further enacted, that if the said county commissioners are satisfied of the truth of the facts, they shall grant an order upon the county treasurer for the amount due to such person, by the provision of this act.
Section 5. And be it further enacted, that all acts and parts of acts, coming within the purview of this act, be, and the same are, hereby repealed.
The same being from the laws of one of the original states, to wit, the state of Ohio, as far as necessary and suitable to the circumstances of the territory of Michigan.
Made adopted and published at the city of Detroit, the twenty-first day of December, one thousand eight hundred and twenty.
