INDIANS – DORMITORY AND SCHOOL AT MACKINAC ISLAND

Records of the Executive Office, 1810-1910, GII, B9, F12; B154, F3, B89, F10.

Union School District #1, Holmes Township, Mackinac County. Commonly referred to as the Indian Dormitory School house at Mackinac. B310 includes Als to Henry P. Baldwin, Governor, from John T. Bailey stating that “permission was first given by Secretary of the Treasury, March 1, 1866, through Hon. J. W. Ferry, M.C. to James Lasley, Esqr., to occupy the Dormitory Building in Mackinac, Michigan, for the use of a union school.”…“By order, January 19, 1867, of the Secretary of the Treasury of U.S. the house (grounds) was leased ,by April 15, 1867, to the school board of the Union School in the Village and County of Mackinac at a rent of ten dollars per annum on condition that the premises were to be surrendered at any time upon receiving thirty days notice from this Dep’t.”…

“By order of the Secretary of the Treasury, May 5, 1866, J. W. McGrath, Esqr., Collector of Customs, Sault, Michigan, was directed to place the property at the disposal of R. M. Smith, Indian agent” with certain proviso.
