Wayne County Naturalization Records

June 25, 2013

Follow these steps to locate Wayne County naturalization records:

  1. Check the Ancestry database (http://search.ancestryinstitution.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1192). If the records are found here, refer the researcher to the National Archives Great Lakes Region facility in Chicago (chicago.archives@nara.gov or 773-948-9001).
  2. Check the partially competed Access databases, which can be found here: U:\MHC_Public\Archives\Access Naturalization. These citations refer to Archives of Michigan volume and box numbers.
  3. Check the microfilm indexes that came with the records. Reel numbers can be found in the finding aid for RG 85-36. These citations refer to the original Wayne County volume and box numbers. Use the finding aid to translate to our volume and box numbers.
  4. If you or the researcher still can’t find a record, there are a small number of records from the Detroit Recorder’s Court at the Burton (http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/Michigan%20and%20Detroit%20Selected%20Genealogical%20Resources.pdf).

Federal Naturalization Records

The USCIS has naturalization certificates from 1906-1956. Researchers can submit questions/requests by e-mail to genealogy.uscis@dhs.gov. I couldn’t find a phone number on the website.

USCIS also has C-files that include information about people who received derivative citizenship.
